Instagram’s CEO, Adam Mosseri, said that the app’s videos will now include auto-generated captions. English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic, Vietnamese, Italian, German, Turkish, Russian, Thai, Tagalog, Urdu, Malay, Hindi, Indonesian, and Japanese are among the 17 languages supported by the auto-generated subtitles. More languages will be supported soon, according to Instagram.
According to Instagram, the new feature “will make Instagram more accessible for users who are in the deaf and hard-of-hearing populations.” It’s also handy for users who choose to watch videos without sound and creators who previously had to manually enter subtitles.
“Auto-generated captions on IG video will help consumers save time by spending less time captioning and more time creating fantastic content,” an Instagram spokesperson stated.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is used to create the captions, and Instagram does not expect them to be perfect right away. However, as the AI learns, the company expects the quality to increase. According to Engadget, the upside of AI-generated captions is that content providers will not be required to add subtitles themselves.
The introduction of auto-generated captions came shortly after Instagram announced that its IGTV app would be discontinued. The business detailed the change in a blog post as part of its attempts to make video discovery and creation as simple as possible. Instagram has stated that it will now concentrate on having all videos on its main app, and that it would continue to simplify and improve video on the main Instagram app over the next months. Later this year, the firm plans to launch a new ad experience on Instagram that will allow creators to earn money from advertising featured on their reels.
